Overview

You drive yourself. There is no guide in the passenger seat, no coach and no fixed schedule - just an open-top electric classic car, the keys, and a full day in the hills south of Rome. The car is a modern take on the Mehari: silent, open on every side, and slow enough that you actually see the country you are driving through. You climb out of the city, cross the vineyards to Frascati, look down into the crater lakes at Castel Gandolfo and Nemi, and finish on the ridge at Tusculum with the whole plain below you. The vehicle is yours for the day, for up to four people, and nobody else is put in the car with you.

What you will do

  • Castel Gandolfo

The Pope's summer town, on the rim of a volcanic crater. You leave the car on the belvedere and the whole of Lake Albano opens up below you.

    30 min

  • A wine town in the hills, with a piazza made for sitting in and the Villa Aldobrandini above it. You reach it by climbing through the vineyards with the roof open.

    45 min

  • A Greek abbey founded in 1004 inside a papal fortress, still lived in by monks who celebrate in Greek twenty minutes from Frascati.

    30 min

  • The smaller of the two crater lakes, known for its wild strawberries and for the Roman ships once sunk in it. The village above looks straight down onto the water.

    30 min

  • The last climb, a quarter of an hour through chestnut woods to a Roman theatre on the ridge. From up here you see the whole plain and the dome of St Peter's.
