Approaching San Gimignano, the view changes again : against the green Tuscan hills, the soaring towers that have made this town famous throughout the world rise towards the sky. An ancient symbol of power and prestige, the towers of San Gimignano are like stone fingers pointing skyward, telling the story of a thriving and ambitious city in the heart of the Middle Ages.
The heart of the town is Piazza della Cisterna, paved in a herringbone pattern, surrounded by historic buildings and dominated by the Devil's Tower. A little further on, Piazza del Duomo, with the Collegiate Church and the Town Hall, boasts frescoes from the Sienese school and a spectacular view from the Torre Grossa, the tallest tower in the city.
