Overview
Lisbon looks easy until you reach Belém. The Jerónimos Monastery queue can swallow two hours, Belém Tower now caps entry at 900 visitors a day, and Belém sits six kilometres from the centre. - Jeronimos Monastery
A monument to the wealth of the Age of Discoveries, it is the pinnacle of Manueline architecture of the period. It was commissioned by King Manuel I around 1501, shortly after Vasco da Gama's return.

Commissioned by King Manuel I, the tower was built from 1515 to 1521 to be a fortress in the middle of the Tagus. The starting point for the Discoveries' navigators, this Manueline jewel became the symbol of Portuguese expansion.

Perched high on the riverbank in Belém, this massive monument was built in 1960 to mark the 500th anniversary of the death of Henry the Navigator.
