Three great cities, three very different personalities. We compare Barcelona, Madrid and Seville to help you choose your first Spanish city break.

Planning your first trip to Spain and can't decide where to start? Barcelona, Madrid and Seville are the country's most popular cities, and each one offers a very different experience.

Barcelona: architecture, beach and creativity

Barcelona is perfect if you want a city and a beach in one trip. Gaudí's buildings, from the Sagrada Família to Park Güell, make the city unlike anywhere else. You can spend the morning in the Gothic Quarter and the afternoon on the sand at Barceloneta. Barcelona is lively, international and easy to explore on foot or by metro.

Best for: first-time visitors, design lovers, couples and families.

Madrid: art, food and big-city energy

Spain's capital is elegant, cultural and full of life until late at night. Madrid has some of the world's greatest art museums, including the Prado and the Reina Sofía, plus beautiful parks and traditional taverns. It's also the best base for day trips to historic cities like Toledo and Segovia.

Best for: art and history lovers, foodies and night owls.

Seville: passion, flamenco and Moorish beauty

Seville is the Spain of postcards: orange trees, flower-filled patios, flamenco and a stunning Moorish palace, the Royal Alcázar. It's smaller and slower than Madrid or Barcelona, and that is part of its charm. From Seville, it's easy to continue to Córdoba and Granada.

Best for: romance, culture, photography and a slower pace.

Can't choose? Combine them

Spain's high-speed trains make it easy to see more than one city. Barcelona to Madrid takes about three hours, and Madrid to Seville about two and a half. Ask us about combining cities into one trip that suits your time and budget.
